The objective was to design a 16" x 10" two-page editorial layout that demonstrated a clear hierarchy and structural unity while managing a high volume of body copy ( words). The requirements included the integration of a headline, deck, pull-out quote, multiple images, and technical credits.
The Design Process: Iterative Evolution
The project followed a rigorous design lifecycle, moving from structural zoning to complex data management and final visual refinement:
Version 1: The Structural Blueprint (Initial Sketch):
I began by developing a 12-column grid to establish the "bones" of the layout. This phase focused on zoning the "Glacier National Park" headline and experimental blocks for text columns to ensure a balanced flow across the gutter.
Version 2: Modular Complexity (Timeline Draft):
In the second iteration, I tested the grid's flexibility by incorporating modular storytelling elements. I integrated a vertical timeline of park milestones (1910–2010) and a secondary feature on "Establishing America’s First National Park" to practice managing disparate content streams within a single cohesive unit.
Version 3: Final Immersive Execution (The "Hero" Layout):
The final version shifted from a modular approach to an **image-dominant strategy**. By bleeding a panoramic photograph of the Continental Divide across the entire lower half of the spread, I anchored the visual narrative and allowed the dense body copy to feel integrated into the environment.
Design Strategy & Hierarchy
Typographic Impact: I evolved the headline from a standard serif to a bold, tall sans-serif for "CROWN OF THE CONTINENT," using a blue drop-shadow to create a 3D effect that mimics the depth of the mountain ranges.
Information Navigation Hierarchy was established through color and shape; a forest-green circular pull-quote was strategically placed to break up vertical text lines and highlight the article's emotional core.
Visual Continuity:I incorporated a stylized "Glacier Montana" postcard graphic to serve as a secondary entry point and reinforce the travel-journalism aesthetic.
Technical Precision: The layout includes functional details such as page numbering, image/text credits, and specific captions aligned with the "Going-to-the-Sun Road" visual path.
