The Frank L. Weyenberg Library brand identity project was a comprehensive academic client engagement focused on repositioning a public library as a modern, welcoming community hub. The objective was to move beyond the perception of the library as “just books” and instead highlight its role as a center for lifelong learning, technology access, programming, and community connection across Mequon, Thiensville, and Ozaukee County.
The project began with a formal client discovery meeting and review of the library’s strategic plan to understand organizational goals, audience needs, tone, and constraints. Key requirements included retaining the library’s recognizable half-circle signage shape, avoiding the existing burgundy color palette, and developing a visual identity that felt welcoming, vibrant, current, and trustworthy. Research and brand audits informed early concept development and ensured alignment with both community values and practical implementation needs.
Multiple brand directions were explored through logo sketches, typography studies, and color palette testing. Following client feedback, the project required a strategic design pivot to improve cohesion, warmth, and community emphasis. Revised concepts focused on visual systems that communicated connection, growth, and idea exchange while maintaining institutional credibility.
The final deliverables included a cohesive logo system, refined typography and color palette, real-world brand applications, and a comprehensive brand guidelines document outlining usage standards and accessibility considerations. The project concluded with a formal presentation of branding concepts and final recommendations to library leadership and the Board of Directors, demonstrating both design rationale and stakeholder communication skills.
This project reflects an end-to-end branding process, combining research, strategy, visual design, iteration, and professional presentation for a real community client
