The goal was to architect a comprehensive and cohesive brand system for the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts (WMQFA) to increase public awareness and boost visitor engagement. Facing a competitive cultural market in Cedarburg, the brand needed to reposition the museum as a vibrant, "informative, colorful, and historical" destination. The challenge was to communicate a dual value proposition: a specialized focus on fiber arts and a deep dedication to historic structure preservation.
The Design Process: Strategic Evolution
Phase 1: Identity Architecture & Logo Design
To honor the museum’s physical roots, I developed a primary identity mark that incorporates the iconic farmstead, reflecting its unique historical setting. The typography was carefully selected to balance heritage with a modern, clean appeal, ensuring the museum feels accessible to both researchers and new tourists.
Phase 2: Visual Language & Tone
I established a brand voice that is Passionate, Educational, and Inviting This was supported by a vibrant, textile-inspired color palette featuring "Santiago Orange" and "Dark Scarlet" designed to evoke the tactile nature of fiber arts while providing high visibility for physical street banners and digital assets.
Phase 3: Multi-Channel Collateral & Messaging
The project culminated in a holistic communication strategy centered on the themes of
Preservation, Education, and Immersive Experience. I defined and designed a suite of essential collateral to ensure consistency across all touchpoints:
Digital: Responsive website interface and social media identity.
Physical: Print postcards, museum pamphlets, and high-impact street banners for the Cedarburg area.
Communication: Systematic layouts for newsletters and educational outreach.
Design Strategy & Outcome
Competitive Repositioning: By moving away from traditional museum aesthetics toward a geometric, grid-based system, the WMQFA now stands out against local competition while maintaining its scholarly authority.
Holistic Implementation: The final Brand Standards Guide provides the museum with the tools to maintain a unified voice across diverse channels, ensuring that their mission of preservation is clearly articulated to every visitor.
Technical Rigor: Every asset from the secondary monogram to the "Brand Artwork" pattern was built with scalability in mind, ensuring a seamless transition from social media profile images to large-scale environmental signage.
